Zero Gravity Arts Consortium (ZGAC)

The Zero Gravity Arts Consortium (ZGAC) is an international space arts organization dedicated to fostering and expanding access for artists to space flight technology and microgravity environments.

Origins and Founders

Founded in 1999 by interdisciplinary artist Frank Pietronigro, alongside Laura Knott and Lorelei Lisowsky, ZGAC was created as a pioneering effort to bridge the gap between the arts and space exploration. Pietronigro himself made history in 1998 as the first American painter to create “drift paintings” while floating in zero gravity aboard NASA’s KC135 aircraft.

Mission and Objectives

The primary mission of the consortium is to break down the barriers that typically restrict space technology to purely scientific and military fields. ZGAC advocates for “artronauts”—artists, curators, and cultural practitioners—by securing them opportunities to experience and utilize space transport systems.

Key objectives include:

  • Parabolic Flight Access: Facilitating opportunities for artists to create works during brief intervals of weightlessness on specialized aircraft.
  • Permanent Space Presence: Advocating for long-term artistic access to cutting-edge aerospace environments, including the International Space Station (ISS) and commercial spaceflight ventures.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Establishing international partnerships between space agencies, aerospace industry entrepreneurs, arts and science organizations, and leading universities.
  • STEAM Initiatives: Promoting the inclusion of the arts within traditional STEM education (turning it into STEAM) through student motion graphics showcases and space art programming at events like the International Space Development Conference (ISDC).

The ZGAC Philosophy

The organization operates under the belief that as humanity transitions into a spacefaring species, our culture, humanities, and artistic expressions must travel with us, ensuring that space exploration isn’t just about technical survival, but also human expression.
