Crucially, the orbital redirection required to paint the asteroid double-functions as a planetary defense mechanism, altering the celestial body&#8217;s trajectory to help protect Earth from a potential impact.<\/p>\n<h2 data-path-to-node=\"6\">The Physics: The Yarkovsky Effect<\/h2>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">An asteroid\u2019s orbit is continuously altered by how it absorbs and emits solar energy.
